What is a Poker Run?

what is a poker run

A poker run is an organized event that involves traveling to five or seven checkpoints, drawing a playing card at each one, and submitting the best hand to win prizes. This type of competition is a fun way to spend the day with your friends or family while raising awareness about a charitable cause.

A Poker Run is Not a Race!

A poker run, which originated in the United States, is not a race. It is an organized event that uses a motorcycle, boat, car or other form of transportation to travel over a predetermined route and draw a playing card at each stop. Participants then compare their cards and the person with the highest poker hand wins the event.

How to Get a Poker Run Off the Ground

The first step in organizing a poker run is to contact local businesses and ask them to be on board. You could offer a prize such as free beers or food while you’re on your way. Alternatively, you could ask the business to donate a percentage of their profits to the charitable cause you’re working on behalf of.

Once you have a list of local businesses that are willing to participate in the poker run, it’s time to start figuring out the route. This can be difficult, but with a little work you can have the route completed in no time.

You’ll need to have each participant purchase a tally sheet that will record the cards they draw at each stop. Each stop will have a volunteer who holds a container with a bag of cards and stirs the cards as participants come to it.

At each stop, participants will draw a card and take their tally sheet with them to the next stop where they’ll be given another card. Once they reach the last stop, they’ll draw a fifth card and submit their final tally sheet to be scored by other volunteers.

How Long Does a Poker Run Last?

A poker run is an exciting and unique event that allows participants to travel through a scenic route while competing for a chance to win cash or prizes. Some runs may only take a few hours while others can last for the entire weekend.

What is the Prize?

The prize of a poker run is usually money, but it can also be a gift certificate from a local business. This is a great way to attract participants and get them excited about the poker run. If you’re planning on a poker run for a charitable event, be sure that the prize is something that will truly inspire the participants to compete.

When looking for an organizer, be sure to check that they have a valid insurance policy. Some organizers do not, which can lead to expensive liability claims if the event goes wrong.
